Katedralen i berget

The Cathedral in the rock

Brother Laurence lived as a lay brother in a monastery in Paris in the 17th century. For the greater part of his life he worked in the monastery’s kitchen. When he had made an omelette, he bowed in joy and thanked God for giving him the opportunity to cook it. When he rose he was happier than any king on earth, he says.

Many a stonemason in Stenskogen in Höör has quarried sandstone for the earliest stone churches in Skåne. The cathedral in Lund is one of the many churches they have brought out from the ground.

Three stonemasons were asked to tell about their work. The first said: “I simply make my living from cutting stone”. The second presented his tools and started to show how he evened out the edges. The third said: “I’m building a cathedral!”

Brother Laurence and the third stonemason challenge us to dare to see the sacred in the simple things.
