Rya kyrkoruin / Rya Church ruin

With the sky as a roof

In the 1870’s the roof and interior of Rya medieval church was auctioned off. A new church was built in Eket and the old church was abandoned. But only for a while.

The church is now a ruin with the sky as a roof and daisies as a floor. The simplicity of the room offers the visitor rest, peace and space. The bare walls make no demands. This is a place for listening to the stillness and the silence.

The Bible tells us that the prophet Elijah once climbed the mountain of Horeb to meet God. A terrible wind blew in that split mountains and crushed rocks, but the Lord was not in the wind. Next came a great earthquake that shook the mountain, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. Then came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire there was a soft whisper. The Lord was in the whisper and asked: Why are you here, Elijah?

In this quietness under the mighty sky the same question is whispered to every person who comes into the space and peacefulness of this place. What do you long for, my friend?

Why are you here?
