Andlighet

Långt innan första kyrkan byggdes här i Edestad var detta en helig plats. Hit till källan vandrade man vid sommarsolståndet för att offra och tillbe. När offerlunden och källan kristnades fortsatte vandrandet hit och Edestad blev en viktig pilgrimskyrka.

Förutom alla sköna helgonbilder av bland andra heliga Birgitta och S:t Martin fanns här också ett triumfkrucifix från 1300-talet, den så kallade Kornguden. Korset bars under tider av året runt i procession över åkrarna. Att räkna med Gud och be om Guds välsignelse över allt växande var naturligt för medeltidsmänniskan. Den gräns vi gärna drar idag mellan materiellt och andligt fanns inte.

Ett av pilgrimens sju nyckelord är andlighet. Pilgrimen upptäcker ofta på sin pilgrimsfärd att jordiskt och himmelskt hör samman. Vandringen mot ett yttre heligt mål öppnar gärna stängda sinnen och himmelens närvaro på jorden börjar anas. Man behöver egentligen inte gå långt eller länge. Det som pilgrimen ger sig av för att söka bär hon redan med sig i sitt inre.

Spirituality

Long before the first church was built here in Edestad it was a holy place. People came here for the summer solstice to sacrifice and worship. When the sacrificial grove and the well were christianised, people continued to come here and Edestad became an important pilgrim church.

Besides the beautiful icons of those like Saint Bridget and Saint Martin there was also a triumphal crucifix from the 14th century called the Barley God. The cross was carried at various times during the year in a procession over the fields. Counting on God and praying for God’s blessing over all things growing was natural for people in the Middle Ages. The boundary we draw today between materiality and spirituality did not exist.

One of the pilgrim’s seven keywords is spirituality. During pilgrimage the pilgrim often discovers that the earthly and the heavenly are connected. Walking towards an outer holy destination often opens closed senses. Heaven’s presence on earth is sensed. You do not have to walk far or long. What the pilgrim sets out to find she already carries inside.
