Heligkorskyrkan i Dalby / The Holy Cross Church in Dalby

Song of praise

The new faith had reached Skåne. Around 1060 a temple was built up here on the hill in Dalby and consecrated to the Cross of Christ. The church was built next to the king’s estate with the help of German builders. No one in these parts had ever seen anything like it in size or style. Egino of Hildesheim was appointed bishop of Dalby even though bishop Henrik was already established in Lund. In 1066 Henrik died and Egino became bishop of Lund. Dalby’s time as the bishop’s residence was over and the estate was turned into an Augustine monastery.

The church has shrunk since the glory days of the Middle Ages. But the mighty granite walls and the remarkable hall, the crypt, in the depths of the church still impress.

Neither the devastating war in Skåne in the 1670’s nor later times of neglect have silenced the people’s song of praise before the Cross of Christ here in Dalby.
