Ljuset

Kyrkan i Sireköpinge är helgad åt Johannes döparen som enligt Bibeln var en släkting till Jesus. Johannes vandrade runt i öknarna i Judéen. Han uppmanade människorna att omvända sig och döpte dem i floden Jordan. Det berättas att han levde av gräshoppor och vildhonung och att hans kläder var gjorda av kamelhår.

Johannes uppgift var att berätta om Jesus, inte om sig själv. När Jesus började sitt uppdrag sände Johannes sina lärjungar vidare till Jesus. På samma sätt är det med Sireköpinge kyrka. Under de snart 900 år som hon stått här på höjden vid Råån har hon berättat om någon annan än sig själv.

Besökaren hör genast hennes berättelse. Längst i öster finns ett absidfönster som fångar besökarens blick. Enligt den kristna traditionen möter Kristus oss från öster, från soluppgångens håll. Varenda sten i Sireköpinge kyrka är lagd för att detta lilla fönster ska kunna fånga in morgonljuset och för att strålarna ska träffa altaret.

The light

The church in Sireköpinge is consecrated to John the Baptist who according to the Bible was a relative to Jesus. John wandered in the deserts of Judea. He called on his countrymen to repent and be baptized by him in the river Jordan. It is written of him that he lived on grasshoppers and wild honey and that his clothes were made out of camel-hair.

John’s mission was to tell about Jesus, not about himself. When Jesus began his mission John sent his disciples over to Jesus. It is the same way with Sireköpinge Church. During the almost 900 years that she has stood here on the hill next to the river Råå she has told about someone other than herself.

The visitor hears her story immediately. At the easternmost end there is a chancel window that catches the visitor’s eye. According to Christian tradition Christ meets us from the east, from the direction of the sunrise. Every stone in Sireköpinge Church is laid to make this small window catch the morning light and for the beams to reach the altar.
