Mellan himmel och jord

Den tunga stenkyrkan ser så lätt ut där hon ligger uppe på höjden. Som om hon svävar mellan himmel och jord. Hit upp har bygdens folk vandrat med sin djupaste glädje och tacksamhet när livet varit lätt att leva. Och med sin bottenlösa sorg, oro och vrede när livet känts omöjligt. Hit har människor burit sina nyfödda till dop och döda till begravning i nära 900 år. Om och om igen har den tunna hinnan mellan himmel och jord, mellan synligt och osynligt, brustit. Därför är detta en helig plats.

Den långa trappan upp till kyrkan ger besökaren möjlighet att förbereda sig innan hon skjuter upp den tunga dörren och söker sig in under valven. Detta är en stund att låta sig förvandlas från turist till pilgrim.

Between heaven and earth

The heavy stone church stands on top of the hill with a lightness as if she were floating between heaven and earth. The people from the neighbouring villages have wandered up here in happiness and gratitude when life has been easy to live. And again when in the depths of despair, worry and wrath life has seemed impossible. For almost 900 years people have carried their infants to be christened up here and their dead to be buried. Again and again the thin film between heaven and earth, between the visible and the invisible, has given way. That is why this is a holy place.

The walk to the top of the stairs where the church stands gives the visitor an opportunity to prepare herself before pushing the heavy door open to find her way below the arches. This is the moment to allow oneself to turn from tourist to pilgrim.
